Girl Assaulted, Family at Church, 1909

From The Atlanta Constitution
Aug. 18, 1909

WHITE MAN ASSAULTS GIRL
WHILE FAMILY IS AWAY

Spring Place, Ga., August 13 (Special). News has just reached this place that an assault was made on a Miss Roe, a member of a respectable family in Wells, of this county.

While the family was attending church, the young girl was gathering roasting ears and an unknown white man appeared, overpowered her, and left her in an unconscious condition.

When she came to herself she went at once to the church, about a half mile away, and related her story.

The meeting which was in progress, broke up and the male members formed a searching party, and are scouring the country.

Sheriff Willbanks and two deputies have gone to assist the party. Excitement is running high and if the guilty party is caught he will likely be lynched.

The young lady says she will know the party should she see him again.
