MURRAY HOUSEHOLDS FROM 1893 MAP
MAP OF MURRAY COUNTY
Surveyed by Sam M. Street in the Summer of 1892
by order of the Board of County Commissioners
Col. W. Luffman, Chairman
A. T. Weaver
S. A. Gregory
J. W. MacKey
W. R. Covington
W. H. Ramsay, Clerk of Board and Ordinary or Judge of County
Murray County is one of the finest counties in the State. Rich farming lands, abundance of iron, talc (or soapstone), slate, marble, etc. Lead is also found, besides gold and silver.
Laying on the 35th parallel of latitude, she has the finest climate in the world. Not froze up in winter nor burned up in summer, but mild and pleasant the year round. South of it is too hot; further north is too cold. ‘Tis the happy belt. Corn, wheat, cotton, clover, tobacco, hay, potatoes, vegetables, etc., grow very luxuriantly; besides fruit and grapes thrive. Apples, peaches, pears, plums, cherries and walnuts do not grow finer anywhere. Chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks and poultry of all kinds do exceedingly well, as they are not troubled with mites and other like pests. The pure air, mild and even climate, excellent water, make it as healthy and pleasant and easy a place to live in as God ever made. The people are genial, clever, and law-abiding. Being well fed and hardy (not pinched and crabbed), they enjoy life truly.
The mountains are splendid ranges for cattle and sheep but there are no sheep there, on account of the dogs.
Tax the infernal curs.
The lower left corner has this notation:

Map Publishers
17 & 19 S. Sixth Street
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
At the bottom of the map appears the following:
Mineral springs are situated along the foot of the mountains and from one end of the county to the other. The water passing through and coming out of iron beds and deposits is very strong and healthful. These waters have long been famous for their curative qualities. Bark wigwams of the Indians stood beside the springs when the white man's foot first pressed this soil. The Indians believed that the Great Spirit dwelled in and around them. There is a beautiful Indian legend concerning them. Long before the white man came the sick and aching Indians from different and even warlike tribes met in peace beside these springs. They called it sacred ground. The same warriors who had only the day before hacked each other to pieces in battle, peacefully washed their wounds in the same healing water and quietly slept in the same wigwam, returning safely to their tribes when well.
The map was printed in color, making it easy to see the boundaries of each of the six militia districts of that time.
Advertisements surrounded the map, top, sides, and bottom:
Loveman & Sons Dry Goods, Dalton.
Bryant & Fincher, Druggists & Pharmacists, Dalton.
W. H. Wilson's Photograph Gallery, Dalton.
The Jimplecute Newspaper, Murray County's only newspaper at that time.
The Temple House, Spring Place.
Dalton Foundry and Machine Shop.
Dalton Furniture and Coffin Emporium.
Dalton Roller Mills.
Cherokee Store, Furniture, Carpet, Coffins and Caskets.
Sam M. Street, Surveryor and Real Estate Sale.
Manly Machine Works, Dalton.
J. L. Tap, Jeweler and Optician.
Dr. Hill Harris, Dentist, Dalton.
J. H. Kenner & Sons, Dry Good and Groceries.
Dr. A. P. Fann, Dentist, Dalton.
Chas. N. King, Attorney-at-Law, Spring Place.
George G. Glenn, Attorney-at-Law, Dalton
The most prominent ad, with some type twice as large as any other on the map, offered PIANOS AND ORGANS, Direct from factory on long and easy payments. Sam Steet, the map's surveyor, also sold these.
Note: The map is too big to display on a computer screen so that the text can be read. The following 6 map segments make it possible to read some of the details. The western part of the map borders Whitfield County. The top map segment for the west side is District 10-3. The middle segment is District 9-3. The bottom Western segment is District 8-3.
The three map segments for the eastern part of the map: top is District 27-2; middle is District 16-2; and bottom is District 25-2.
The following alphabetical-by-family-name listing of families transcribed from the map has a very few names that simply could not be deciphered, usually because the name had been written across the map's contour lines used to depict ridges and mountains. In a few instances there was only a family name written on the map–we notated such instances thusly: (no more).
Even with powerful magnifiers, and maps from several different printings, a few notations simply could not be read.
Many of the churches, schools, stores, gins, etc., did not give any other information. Consequently there are groups of each of these in the alphabetical listing.
Even though the federal government took a census for 1890, the forms were accidentally destroyed in a fire. This listing is the best possible substitute for information about Murray County's citizens between the 1880 Census and the 1900 Census. It was supposed to show every inhabited dwelling in the county.
