John Moore


John Moore was born January 4, 1826, in what is now Macon County, NC. His parents were Abner Senter and Ann (Cook) Moore.

He married Catherine Watson January 18, 1846, in Cherokee County, NC.

The Census of 1860 shows the family was then living in Shooting Creek, NC.

In 1870 the Census lists them in Polk County, TN.

The 1880 Census lists the family, then living in Alaculsa, Murray County, GA., as follows: John Moore, age 54; Catherine Moore, age 53; Virgil W. Moore, age 25; John E. Moore, age 21; Mary J. Moore, age 19; Leander T. Moore, age 17; Mary C. Moore, age 14, and Ulies G. Moore, age 12.

By 1880 the older children had married and were living in their own homes.

One of the family genealogies lists the following children born to John and Catherine Moore:

    Frances "Fanny" Elizabeth, born April 6, 1847. Married David Mathis. She died March 10, 1926. Buried Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Tennga, GA.

    Abner Senter II, born October 17, 1848. Married Martha Cochran. He died September 7, 1927. Buried Shed Cemetery, Ocoee, TN.

    Anna A., born September 6, 1850. Married Emanuel Creasman. Death details unknown.

    Isaac Taylor, born August 30, 1852. Married Margret Bennett. Died November 4, 1889.

    Virgil Wilson, born December 28, 1854. Married Harriet Campbell. He died March 12, 1946. Buried Ocoee, TN.

    John Ellen, born September 16, 1858. Married Roxey Elizabeth -------? He died February 22, 1924. Buried Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Tennga, GA.

    Martha Jane, born February 19, 1861. Married Willis Smith Arthur. She died February 9, 1946. Buried Hopewell Church Cemetery, Murray County, GA.

    Leander T., born May 3, 1863. Married Rose Campbell. He died December 12, 1952. Buried at Calhoun, TN.

    Mary Catherine, born 1866. Never married. Died March 1903.

    Ulysses Grant, born 1868. Never married. Death date unknown. He was listed in the 1900 Census. Buried Hopewell Church Cemetery, Murray County, GA.


During the Civil War, John enlisted in the Union Army, as a private in Co. C, 5th Regiment Tennessee Volunteers (Mounted Infantry). After the war he was a Baptist minister.

The Census of 1900 shows that John Moore was living in the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Willis Smith Arthur, in Polk County, TN. John's unmarried son, Ulyssis (Ulysses) was also living in that household.

Catherine died July 4, 1899. John died August 7, 1900. Both are buried in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery, Murray County, GA.
