William Cleveland

The 1860 Census listed this Murray County family as William, age 28; Hannah V., age 29; Mary E. C., age 8; Cyntha M., age 6; Obediah, age 4; Comfort M., age 1; and Ester C. Cleaveland, also age 1. The family used the post office at Hasslers Mills. The Census listed the family name as Cleaveland rather than Cleveland.

William Cleveland enlisted as a Private in Company C, 11th Infantry, Anderson Brigade, July 3, 1861. His unit participated in military engagements at Fairfax, Virginia, September 22, 1861, and at Yorktown, Virginia, April 5 to May 4, 1862.

William died of typhoid pneumonia at Charlottesville, Virginia on May 13, 1862. He was buried there in a Confederate Cemetery.

Hannah moved the family to Union County, Georgia, before the 1870 Census was taken. The listing for that family in 1870 was: Hannah Cleveland (head of household), age 38; Mary E. C. Cleveland, age 17; Cyntha M. Cleveland, age 15; Obidiah Cleveland, age 14; Comfort M. Cleveland, age 10; Esther C. Cleveland, age 10; John W. Cleveland, age 8; and Columbus L. Cleveland, age 2.
