On January 19 (1960), the Murray Indians were rocking along with a 13-1 record, their only loss being to Westside, a non-region team. Scheduled to go to East Rome, disaster struck in the form of a car wreck. Selwyn Cochran, an All-Stater the previous year, was lost to the team for the season and Center Lamarr Henry was also injured. On January 22 of the same week, with only two regulars in the starting line-up, Murray bowed to Rossville by the scant margin of four points. This was the last time fans were to see the 1959-60 edition of the Indians lose, for after this they were only to witness this team write history in the form of being the first Murray team to win the State Championship. Led by the scoring of Center Lamar Henry and the rebounding of guard Paul Ridley, these Indians astounded cage observers by averaging 71 points per game at the Class AA Tournament held in Macon, Georgia. Henry was selected as the most outstanding boy performer in the tournament and listed on the All-Tournament team selected by the writers of the Macon and Atlanta newspapers. Ray Poag, Gene Smith, and Wayne Graves were also selected on the All-Tournament team by either the Atlanta or Macon newspapers. From a regular season records of 19 wins and 2 losses; to Champions of Region 3AA, then to the mythical State Crown, this team made a prophet of Coach Kenneth Ross when he said "We've got the best team in the state."
