MURRAY COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL

SCHOOL YEAR 1946-47
(Waiting for basic information about student body and faculty)

Senior Class Trip

The day arrived! The day for the senior trip, that is. It was on May 6, 1947, that forth members of the senior class left by chartered bus for a sight-seeing trip of Atlanta, Macon, Savannah, Athens, and points in between. Mrs. Carl Packard, Mrs. Sam Maynard accompanied the class on the trip.

While in Atlanta, the points of interest to all included Georgia Tech, the state Capitol, Grant Park, the Cyclorama, and the airport.

At Jonesboro the group visited the Fair of 1850 which shows the steps of development of the textile industry. This was of especial interest to everyone.

Just before reaching Macon, the travelers saw the beautiful campus of Wesleyan College. They toured parts of Macon and saw the site of Mercer University.

As darkness was falling, Savannah came into view. And there was the ocean right at our very door for Riverside Lodge was chosen as the stopping-place. After everyone was given a chance to become settled, the members divided into groups. Some stayed on the boardwalsk, some saw a movie; and some preferred to stay at the hotel and talk.

The morning tour of Savannah led the sight-seers to visit Johnson Square, Tybee Island, and the historic old lighthouse.

The trip home brought them through Athens where they saw the University of Georgia. In Tate they visited the marble works. And as all good things, the trip came to an end all too soon. It was a very enjoyable trip and will probably recur in everyone's mind as a favorite memory.

(This article was copied from what appears to be a school newspaper without a name, each page has at the top a page number followed by Murray County High School, May 16, 1947. Paper was typeset and contained photographs. It had at least 10 pages, perhaps more (only selected loose pages were submitted to murraycountymuseum.) There were ads on the pages submitted for several businesses: Cohutta Banking Company; Albert Gregory's Garage; The Home Store; Fort Café; Stewart Drug Store; Powell Café; Cohutta Cab Co. ("Call 93"); Gregory & Peeples Ford; Springfield Brothers; Fred Brown & Sons; Chatsworth Cleaners; A.A.A.; Chatsworth Grocery Co. and The Pines Service Station.)
