MURRAY COUNTY HERITAGE

-Chapter V-
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
Transportation

In the past, Murray was served by the L&N, bus routes, and horse and wagon. Tennga once had the Rosstex air strip and the Dalton Municipal Airport is as close to Murray soil as it is to the city limits of Dalton, but the highways are the county's main means of transportation.

U.S. 411 and Georgia 225 run the length of the county while U.S. 76 and Georgia 52 cross it from river to mountain, U.S. 411 was once known as one of the state's most dangerous highways. In 1976 Governor George Busbee and Department of Transportation Commissioner Tom Moreland (a Murray native) participated in the formal opening of a "new, smoother, straighter, and safer" 411.

Five years later a virtually new five-lane U.S. 76 was completed, effectively joining Interstate 75 and 411 via Dalton, Gladden Springs, Central, and Chatsworth. This certainly eased the traffic problem for the many Murray residents who are employed in Whitfield. A portion of this highway has been named the Gordon Maddox Parkway in honor of G.I. Maddox, a longtime Murray High vocational agriculture instructor (who taught road commissioner Moreland).
